Mystery Inc and Scooby Doo watercolor pt1

I've been working off and on for the last few weeks on a watercolor. But it isn't just any watercolor... it is of Scooby Doo and the rest of the Mystery Inc. gang!!! -or at least my take on them :)

I started by just doing a quick sketch study of the characters and their position in the classic opening of Scooby Doo, Where Are You. After that, I spent countless evil hours searching the web for the right photo references, because you see, I wanted to paint them in a slightly more "realistic" style (for lack of a better word.) I found Daphne and Velma's counterparts in Alfred Hitchcock movie posters and stills. I used some photos of an old TV comedian and some friends for the foundation of Shaggy and Fred. And I then used photos of great Danes for Scooby. I tried to use the references as a jumping of point in my search for the perfect image in between the original characters and reality.

I believe I then added the inks with a size B and size S PITT artist pen from Faber Castell. I love inking, and using the pens this time really helped me make sure to keep every little detail I wanted from the sketch.

I will try to have more of the process up soon. Right now I'm just about finished adding all the watercolors and background, I just need to get it all on my computer.
I hope you like it so far!
Thanks taking a look and God bless ya!

Fall Bugs for NMB blog

I'm still really excited about the stuff we are doing over on the NEEDS MORE BLUE Blog! I know I haven't posted much on here lately, but its because I am still finishing up a watercolor that I am working on and any time I do get, I have been using to make stuff for NMB. Don't worry, I should be putting more stuff up on here soon!

Special Bonus:
Here are some of the rough sketches I did for this week's NMB theme: Fall Bugs.
You can see the finished, colored drawing here.

I used the book The History of Animation: Enchanted Drawings for reference because it has great character designs of Bugs Bunny from the 1940's and 50's. Get it? I used a play on words! :P

Thanks for checking in! God Bless!
