    It's almost that spooky time of year again & the #MonsterMySelfie Monster Portrait Month sale is back just in time! That's right, you asked for it & you've got it. Back in October 2014, I began a project where  I "Monsterized" your selfies. I received one of the biggest responses I've had for an original art project & many of you have been asking for the sale to return since then. Aside from the occasional portrait I was able to squeeze in here & there (like the two above,) I haven't opened up orders for the monster portraits in four years. But that changes now!

    What is a pirate to do when the ship is sunk? Look for a new job! Here are a series of playful illustrations completed for a hypothetical project. They would work for an article about job hunting or a picture book or comic about pirates looking for work. Their purpose is to demonstrate my ability to create various illustrations about a theme & design "simplified & cartoony" characters. You may remember these guys from the little "sneak peaks" & process posts I put up a little while back. You can click the images below to see them bigger.

   Here's more of my character design & composition process:

I started by sketching different pirates & their pets that may need to find a new job. All of these were drawn in pencil on paper. -Philip A. Buck 2018

I continued to sketch the pirates & their possible pets (yes, there was almost a monkey!) in multiple job hunting pirate related situations. Not all of them panned out. All of these were drawn in pencil on paper. -Philip A. Buck 2018

I tightened up the designs & came up with a few more situations. I also drew different elements of the illustrations that I could piece together later in Photoshop during the inking stage. All of these were drawn in pencil on paper.

Easter 2018: A Look Back at "The Last Supper"

    Happy Passover & Easter Weekend to you all! I hope you all enjoy taking part in celebrating the great love of God & all that He's done for us.

6When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. 7Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. 8But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. 9And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. 10For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. 11So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.

Pirates Progress

    Hello friends! Welcome back. Did you see it in my last Instagram story? I’ve been drawing pirates in preparation for a thing. It's a personal project type of thing. You see, I'm drawing these awesome pirates to get some practice drawing more "simple & cartoony" characters & illustrations. I draw this kind of stuff a fair bit when I'm just doodling in my sketchbook, but I haven't made any "finished work" like this in a while. I'm thinking that if these illustrations & characters turn out decently, they'll make great additions to my portfolio.

    Sometimes, seemingly out of nowhere, an idea for a story or project you had a long time ago will suddenly come back to you with new fire & excitement. New ideas. New characters. Maybe just a funny situation. That’s been happening a bit more often to me lately. Here’s my sketch/drawing of a teen model on Pinterest that captured many of the qualities shared with a couple of teen characters in some of the aforementioned projects. I changed her hat. 😅 Something recently made me really need to gather reference images, sketch characters & think of possible story threads & characters for some old ideas I’d pretty much shelved for a while. This was one sketch that made me realize a couple of these separate ideas could actually be parts of the same big story! Hmm maybe...
