Monster My Selfie - Vampire Kid Portraits! (Halloween 2022)

Rhett & Juniper, children of the niiiight! Two 5x7 inch ink drawings on bristol board paper.

Happy Halloween everyone! Here are a couple of awesome kids I had the pleasure of turning into monsters this month. I had drawn their parents as vampires for the #MonsterMySelfie Portrait Sale back in 2014 & even their dog as a ghost in 2017. This year, their folks jumped at the opportunity to monsterize the kids too! How neat is that? Take a look below to see a glimpse of my process & the whole monster family. You can click any of the pictures to view them larger.

I sketched on paper & in Photoshop different ideas for how the kids were going to look. I then sketched out monster versions of the kids in Photoshop. I printed off black & white versions of the reference photos, then used my light pad to make sure I had positioned the kids' features & shadows in the right places with correct proportions on the final bristol board paper. I lightly drew the kids "normally" to try to maintain their likenesses.

Then I printed off the monster sketches (at different sizes to make sure one of them would match the scale I was working in,) & used the light pad again to make sure I was placing the monster features in the right places.

Following that, I referred back to the original photos, black & white photos & sketches to draw out the final "monsterized" versions. I used various ink pens to ink the drawings & a bit of white ink & white posca marker to make a few touch ups.

#MonsterMySelfie Portraits: Monster Chris, the Triclops!

During the #MonsterMySelfie ink portrait sale last month, it was my great pleasure to complete a portrait of Chris. I had done a portrait of his kind wife, Heather a few years back as a Medusa-like monster & was excited to give hers a mate.

As you can see in the process snapshots below, I changed the original photo into black & white & adjusted the levels of contrast. That makes it easier to work from.

I then came up with a monsterized version of Chris in rough sketches. I then traced the basic shapes of the photo, (a step I don’t always do, but one I use when I am having difficulty with the likeness or just need to get it figured out faster.)

I then took a look back at the b&w photo & Monster sketch as I drew & inked the portrait.

I had a lot of fun making this portrait of Chris & was glad Heather's would now have a companion. I hope you all had a safe & fun Halloween & Thanksgiving. I'll be posting another of this year's Monster Portraits on here next week, but if you want to sneak a look, you can visit my social media accounts listed to the side of this page. As always, thanks for stopping by & may God bless you!

#MonsterMySelfie Monster Portraits Are Back! Also, Monsterized Bailey & Stephen!

Bailey & Stephen - Monster Portraits.
Ink with technical pens & brush pens on  two pieces of 5x7 inch Bristol board paper.

It's almost that spooky time of year again & the #MonsterMySelfie Monster Portrait Month sale is back just in time! That's right, you asked for it & you've got it. Back in October 2014, I began a project where  I "Monsterized" your selfies. I received one of the biggest responses I've had for an original art project & many of you have been asking for the sale to return since then. Aside from the occasional portrait I was able to squeeze in here & there (like the two above,) I haven't opened up orders for the monster portraits in four years. But that changes now!

HALLOWEEN 2017: A Ghost Pup, Monster Portraits of Halloween Past & Jack O' Lantern Wonderment.

Dakota the ghost dog!

Happy Halloween, boos & ghouls! May I present to you this petrifying pet portrait I recently drew! As some of you may recall, I had a special sale back October of 2014 called, "Monster Portrait Month," which was also know by its hashtag, "#MonsterMySelfie." It was quite fun & many monsters were made. Since then, I've had requests for a return of Monster Portrait Month, but due to many factors have never been able to do it again. Maybe some day! YET, a friend of mine named Heath just happened to catch me at a perfect time with an opening in my schedule. He requested this ghostly portrait of he & his wife Amanda's dog. You see, back during the original Monster Portrait Month, I had drawn monster portraits of both of them & Heath's hope was to surprise Amanda with the portrait of their pet as a way of completing their "monsterfied family," so to speak. He asked, if it was possible, if I could make their pup look like Zero from The Nightmare Before Christmas. What a fun idea & project! I was happy to hear from Amanda & Heath that they really enjoyed the way the piece turned out! (By the way, Amanda is not only a good friend, but quite the artist! Check out her Facebook page & Instagram.)

Let's take a quick look back at the Monster Portraits from 2014!
